This March 8, we not only commemorate International Women’s Day, but reflect on the real work that many women do day in and day out throughout the year to make a real impact on our industry. An impact that goes beyond words.
An evolving sector, but with challenges to overcome
Although the presence of women in the global workforce continues to grow, the technology sector remains one of the laggards in terms of female representation. In 2024, only 5% of leadership positions in the technology sector in Spain were held by women, and globally, women represent only around 30% of the technology workforce, with even lower percentages in specialized technical areas such as artificial intelligence or cybersecurity.
This also translates into significant wage disparities. In 2024, women working in European technology companies earned, on average, 26% less than their peers.
8M is a reminder that the work for equality never ends and to give a more authentic vision of what it means to be a woman in the technology sector, at CENTUM we have decided to give voice to some of our female colleagues. In this video, women who are part of the CENTUM team from different departments answer questions such as:
- “How do you imagine the industry with more women in it?”
- “Do you feel like you’ve had to prove more at work because you’re a woman?”
- “What would you say to a girl who wants to go into this?”
These are not meaningless questions. They are concrete questions that, when heard out loud, may seem hard to believe, but they are part of the reality that many women live in on a daily basis.
By answering these questions, our colleagues in a way give voice to many women who face daily barriers and manage to overcome them, demonstrating that, when given the opportunity, they can break the mold and transform the sector. Each one of them shares her personal experience, her challenges and her victories, because we understand that true equity is built from genuine and authentic experiences, not generic phrases.
Lucía, María, Marta, Carmen and all the women who make up CENTUM have had to face challenges that go beyond gender barriers throughout their professional careers. From the beginning, they have faced the task of proving their worth in an environment where stereotypes still predominate, often being the only women in technical meetings. However, these obstacles have not stopped them, but rather motivated them to move forward. The technology industry needs this fresh, diverse and courageous perspective to face the challenges of the future. And our peers and the women in the industry are not only ready for those challenges, but are meeting them with creativity, innovation and tireless determination.
Words like “Courage”, “Equality”, “Visibility”, “Challenge”… are words that reflect that, despite all the progress that has been made, 8M is still necessary.
At CENTUM we know that real change doesn’t happen overnight, but every step towards an inclusive and diverse culture brings us closer to a more just future. 8M is just a date, but it symbolizes so much more. It is a reminder of the progress we have made and of our ongoing commitment to equality. We will continue to work to transform the technology industry into a space where women are not only present, but can lead and redefine the future.
And for you, what does 8M mean?
