Today, September 26, is World Maritime Day, a day that has been commemorated since 1980 and has a special meaning for all of us who are committed to safety at sea. Under the slogan “Sailing into the Future: Safety First”, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) reminds us of the importance of maintaining and improving maritime safety to ensure a sustainable future.

The mission of SAR teams: Saving lives every day

At the heart of maritime safety are search and rescue (SAR) teams, which are the first line of defense when it comes to saving lives in emergency situations. Whether facing storms, extreme conditions or any other challenge at sea, SAR teams are prepared to act with speed and precision.

In 2023 alone, Salvamento Marítimo coordinated the rescue, assistance or search of 58,056 people, an average of 159 per day in Spain alone.

The crucial role of technology in SAR operations

Technology plays a critical role in maritime SAR operations. Advances in locating, communications and monitoring devices have transformed the way SAR teams operate, enabling them to respond faster and with greater accuracy.

Our devices are equipped with technology that enables SAR teams to identify the exact location of people in distress, even in areas without coverage via their cell phones as long as the devices are turned on. This type of technology not only improves the efficiency of operations, but also increases the chances of success in each mission.

For example, recent reports show that SAR operations have experienced a 20% increase in efficiency due to the incorporation of advanced location technologies. These results underscore the importance of continuous innovation.

Our company is proud to support this vital work by creating mobile location devices specifically designed to facilitate the work of SAR teams. These devices are essential for improving efficiency in rescue missions, enabling teams to locate and save lives more quickly.

IMO and its commitment to maritime safety and security

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been a driving force in improving safety and security at sea. This year, in addition to the World Maritime Day celebration, Spain hosted a side event from October 20-22, where international experts discussed critical issues related to maritime safety, marine environmental protection and the future challenges facing global shipping.

For SAR teams, these events are an opportunity to exchange knowledge, learn from best practices and explore new technologies that can be crucial in their life-saving mission.

Recognizing the tireless work of the SAR teams

This World Maritime Day, we want to pay tribute to all SAR team members who, day in and day out, risk their lives to protect others. Their bravery, dedication and professionalism are an inspiration to us all.

At our company, we remain committed to developing technologies that support these teams, helping them to carry out their mission as efficiently and safely as possible.

A call to action: Innovation for a secure future

This year’s theme, “Sailing into the Future: Safety First,” reminds us that we must continue to innovate and improve our tools and procedures to ensure a safer future at sea. We join the IMO in this commitment, and will continue to work to provide SAR teams with the tools they need to keep saving lives.

Today, we invite everyone to reflect on the importance of maritime safety and to recognize the incredible work of the SAR teams who work tirelessly to protect us at sea.
